About this running pace calculator

Pace is the time it takes to cover one mile or one kilometer, and it's how runners plan training and race strategy. Enter a finish time for a race or workout and this calculator converts it into pace per mile, pace per kilometer and average speed.

Use it to set goal paces for a 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon, or to check how fast a training run really was.

How to use the Running Pace Calculator

  1. Choose a race distance or enter a custom distance.
  2. Enter your finish time in hours, minutes and seconds.
  3. Read your pace per mile and per kilometer, plus speed.

How pace is calculated

Pace = total time ÷ distance

One mile is exactly 1.609344 km. Speed is distance ÷ time, converted to miles or kilometers per hour.

Worked example

A 5K in 28:30 is a pace of about 9:10 per mile or 5:42 per kilometer — an average speed of 6.54 mph.

Tips for better results

  • Run easy training runs 60–90 seconds per mile slower than your 5K race pace.
  • GPS watches can overestimate distance on curvy routes; race distances are measured precisely.
