About this roi calculator

Return on investment (ROI) measures how much you gained or lost relative to what you put in. It's the simplest way to compare very different uses of money — an ad campaign, new equipment, a rental property or a stock — on the same scale.

Because a 30% return over one year is very different from 30% over five years, the calculator also shows annualized ROI when you enter the time period.

How to use the ROI Calculator

  1. Enter the total amount invested, including fees and costs.
  2. Enter the total amount you got back.
  3. Optionally enter the time period in years.
  4. Read ROI, net profit and annualized ROI.

The ROI formula

ROI = (Returned − Invested) ÷ Invested × 100

Annualized ROI = (Returned ÷ Invested)1/years − 1, which is the same as the compound annual growth rate.

Worked example

Spending $2,000 on a marketing campaign that brings in $2,600 of gross profit gives an ROI of 30% and $600 net profit. If that took two years, the annualized ROI is about 14%.

Tips for better results

  • For marketing ROI, use gross profit from the sales generated, not total revenue.
  • Include all costs — time, fees and taxes — or ROI will look better than it is.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ROI?

It depends on risk and time. Compare against alternatives such as a savings account or index fund over the same period.

What is the difference between ROI and ROAS?

ROAS (return on ad spend) divides revenue by ad cost. ROI subtracts costs and uses profit, so it shows whether you actually made money.
