About this tip calculator

Tipping is customary for restaurant service in the US, typically 15–20% of the pre-tax bill, and more for exceptional service. This calculator works out the tip and total and splits it evenly between your group, with an option to round each person's share up so nobody is hunting for coins.

It also works for delivery, rideshare, salon and other services where you choose a tip percentage.

How to use the Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount (many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal).
  2. Choose a tip percentage.
  3. Enter how many people are splitting.
  4. Optionally round each share up, then read what each person pays.

How the tip is calculated

Tip = Bill × tip%  ·  Each = (Bill + Tip) ÷ people

If rounding is on, each share is rounded up to the next whole dollar, and the extra goes to the server as part of the tip.

Worked example

An $86.40 bill with an 18% tip adds $15.55, for a total of $101.95. Split four ways, each person pays $25.49, or $26 each with rounding.

Tips for better results

  • A quick 20% tip: move the decimal one place left and double it.
  • Check whether a service charge or automatic gratuity is already included for large groups.
