About this temperature converter

Temperature scales don't share a zero point, so unlike most units you can't convert them with a single multiplication. This converter applies the correct formula for Fahrenheit, Celsius, Kelvin and Rankine, and the chart below covers common weather, body and oven temperatures.

Fahrenheit is used for everyday temperatures in the United States, Celsius in most of the world, and Kelvin in science, where 0 K is absolute zero.

How to use the Temperature Converter

  1. Type the value you want to convert.
  2. Choose the unit you're converting from and the unit you want.
  3. Read the result — the table below shows the value in every other unit.
  4. Use Swap to reverse the conversion.

Conversion factors

°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9  ·  °F = °C × 9/5 + 32  ·  K = °C + 273.15

Celsius is the base. °F → °C subtracts 32 and multiplies by 5/9; °C → °F multiplies by 9/5 and adds 32. Kelvin is Celsius + 273.15, and Rankine is Fahrenheit + 459.67.

Worked example

A 72 °F room is (72 − 32) × 5/9 = 22.2 °C. An oven set to 180 °C is 180 × 9/5 + 32 = 356 °F — most recipes round it to 350 °F.
