Data Storage Converter
Convert bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and binary MiB/GiB/TiB units.

About this data storage converter
File sizes and storage capacities use two systems that look almost identical. Drive makers and network speeds use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), while many operating systems report binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). That's why a new "1 TB" drive appears as about 931 GB on a computer.
This converter handles both systems, plus bits, so you can compare download speeds, storage plans and file sizes accurately.
How to use the Data Storage Converter
- Type the value you want to convert.
- Choose the unit you're converting from and the unit you want.
- Read the result — the table below shows the value in every other unit.
- Use Swap to reverse the conversion.
Conversion factors
1 GB = 1,000 MB · 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB · 1 byte = 8 bits
Bytes are the base. Decimal units multiply by 1,000 at each step (KB, MB, GB, TB, PB). Binary units multiply by 1,024 (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB). One byte is 8 bits.
Worked example
A 1 TB drive holds 1012 bytes, which is about 931.32 GiB. A 100 Mbps connection transfers about 12.5 MB per second.
Common conversions
| Gigabyte → Megabyte | 1 GB = 1,000 MB | 5 GB = 5,000 MB | 10 GB = 10,000 MB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terabyte → Gigabyte | 1 TB = 1,000 GB | 5 TB = 5,000 GB | 10 TB = 10,000 GB |
| Gigabyte → Gibibyte | 1 GB = 0.931323 GiB | 5 GB = 4.656613 GiB | 10 GB = 9.313226 GiB |
| Terabyte → Gibibyte | 1 TB = 931.322575 GiB | 5 TB = 4,656.6129 GiB | 10 TB = 9,313.2257 GiB |
| Megabyte → Bit | 1 MB = 8,000,000 bit | 5 MB = 40,000,000 bit | 10 MB = 80,000,000 bit |
Tips for better results
- Internet speeds are in bits per second (Mbps); file sizes are in bytes (MB) — divide by 8 to compare.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?
By the SI standard, 1 GB = 1,000 MB. The binary unit 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. Some software labels GiB as "GB".
Why does my hard drive show less space than advertised?
The maker uses decimal units and your computer reports binary units, so 1 TB shows as about 931 GB.
