About this image compressor
Big photos slow down websites, bounce off email attachment limits and get rejected by upload forms with size caps like 2 MB or 500 KB. This compressor re-encodes your image at the quality you choose and can also cap its width, then shows the before-and-after size and a preview so you can judge the trade-off.
WebP output is usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar visual quality and is supported by all modern browsers.
How to use the Image Compressor
- Choose or drop an image.
- Adjust the quality slider and optional maximum width.
- Check the new file size and preview.
- Download the compressed image.
How compression works
JPEG and WebP use lossy compression: they discard detail the eye barely notices. Quality around 70–80% usually looks nearly identical to the original at a fraction of the size. Reducing pixel dimensions has an even bigger effect, because the file stores fewer pixels.
Worked example
A 3.8 MB, 4032 × 3024 phone photo compressed at 75% quality with a 1600 px max width typically comes out around 250–400 KB — a saving of about 90%.
Tips for better results
- To hit a specific limit like 200 KB, lower the max width first, then the quality.
- Transparent PNGs get a white background when saved as JPG.
Frequently asked questions
How much can I compress a photo?

Is compression reversible?
