Roman Numeral Converter
Convert numbers to Roman numerals and Roman numerals back to numbers.
About this roman numeral converter
Roman numerals still appear on clock faces, book chapters, movie credits, Super Bowl titles, building cornerstones and tattoos. This converter turns any number from 1 to 3,999 into standard Roman numerals and reads Roman numerals back into ordinary numbers — just type either one.
It also checks that a numeral is written in standard form, so it will catch common mistakes like IIII or VX and suggest the correct version.
How to use the Roman Numeral Converter
- Type a number (1–3999) or a Roman numeral.
- Read the converted value instantly.
Roman numeral rules
The symbols are I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000. Symbols are added from largest to smallest; a smaller symbol placed before a larger one is subtracted. Only six subtractive pairs are standard: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900).
Worked example
2026 is MM (2000) + XX (20) + VI (6) = MMXXVI. MCMXCIX is 1000 + 900 + 90 + 9 = 1999.
