Number to Words Converter
Spell out any number in English words, or format a dollar amount for a check.
About this number to words converter
Checks, legal documents, invoices and some forms require amounts written out in words to prevent fraud and misreading. This tool spells out any number in English, and its check style formats dollar amounts the way banks expect: the dollars in words followed by the cents as a fraction of 100.
It handles numbers up to the quadrillions, as well as decimals and negative numbers in plain style.
How to use the Number to Words Converter
- Enter the number (commas and a $ sign are fine).
- Choose check style or plain words.
- Copy the wording onto your check or document.
How numbers are written in words
The number is split into groups of three digits — ones, thousands, millions and so on. Each group is spelled out (for example "two hundred fifty") and followed by its scale word. Hyphens join compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine, following standard American style, which omits "and" except before the cents.
Worked example
$1,250.75 written on a check is One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100 dollars.
Tips for better results
- Start writing at the far left of the line and draw a line through any empty space after the amount.
- Make sure the written amount matches the numeric box — banks generally treat the written amount as the legal one.
